Between planning a wedding, moving to a new city, buying a house, decorating that house, finding a full time job while working part time and blogging, Its safe to say that this is the busyiest I’ve ever been and you know what?? I don’t think its going to get less busy any time soon. In this season, instead of burying myself under the covers and crying.. which ill admit has happened, I have chosen to explore new ways to better myself and increase my productivity.
There are numerous books and articles out there that talk about how to be productive. I recently read an article on LifeHack.Org (favourite website) talking about 50 ways to increase your productivity.
Instead of reading the full article, I decided to summarize some key points and share 10 ways that I try to stay productive these days.
1. Take a break
Scheduling breaks is just as important as scheduling time for work. You’ve heard it said- All work and No play makes Jack a dull boy. Breaks are important for maximum productivity.
2. Set a Timer
And keep track to see if you are actually able to keep the time. This will help you plan for subsequent days. It will also allow you to figure out how many tasks you can include in a 24 hour time frame.
3. Write a To- Do List each day
I cannot stress enough how important it is to make lists. I make lists about everything. It is most useful to make these lists the night before that way when you wake up you are ready to start being productive.
4. Complete the Most Dreaded Task First
If you get it out of the way, you can hopefully look forward to the rest of the things on your list of things to do.
5. Auto Pay your bills
There are some things that you shouldn’t have to schedule or think about- Bills are one of them. I think the best way to go about this is by making automatic payments that way you don’t have to worry about missing a payment and you don’t have to waste time figuring out how you will handle a missing payment.
6. Learn to say No
This is one that I had to learn in the past few years- You cannot do everything! Learn to cut out things that are distractions. When it comes to productivity, you have to be ruthless.
Saying No doesnt just apply to other people, you also have to learn to say No to yourself- No to social media, No to randomly surfing the web etc.
7. Shop Online
Shopping online (when possible) saves you the time spent going to the store. Just be careful that you don’t spend all day going from one site to another.
8. Sleep Early, Wake up Early
While sleep is important (we all need to rest once in a while). Think of all the things you could be doing instead of sleeping. A healthy balance is key. Furthermore, research shows that we are more productive the first 2 hours after we wake up. This means once you wake up, get up and start your day.. don’t lay in bed thinking about the day ahead.. just start doing right away!!
9. Do Similar Tasks Together
It helps when you can group similar tasks and get through them at the same time. For instance, when I often group all wedding related tasks and do them together. This may include responding to emails, following up with vendors, looking through pinterest etc. When I group related tasks, I’m more likely to actually get them done!
10. Caller ID
This is to ensure that you are not wasting time speaking to people you don’t want to (Remember you have to be ruthless). When you have a mountain of tasks to get through, it can be pretty annoying to get a call from a tele-marketer or someone who wont take a hint to get of the phone. Even if they can take a hint, you will never get back those seconds you spent explaining that you’ll have to call them back later. I cant be the only one who looks at my phone, sees who it is and decides not to answer right?! ?
