Working from home may seem like a dream but it definitely comes with its challenges. As you may or may not know, both my sister and I have full time jobs, but once in a while, we do get the opportunity to work from home. I know that I am not alone when it comes to staying focused and motivated to actually do work when I work from home. It can be difficult to pull away from the life stuff happening in your home and focus on the work that is in front of you. After a few failed attempts, I quickly learned that in order to be successful, you need to actually WORK from home. Today I am going to be sharing my top tips on How I Stay Productive When Working From Home!
Whether you work from home on a daily basis or side-hustle from home on the weekends… Or if you are studying at home, these tips are for you!!
// DO NOT SLEEP IN
Working from home is not an excuse to roll out of bed whenever you like. Set a time that you want to start working and stick to it! You want to start your day just how you intend it to continue. Just like with any job, there are days where you will be tempted to lay in bed just a little bit longer, or even stay in bed all day. You don’t have this luxury at a regular 9-5, so you should not take this luxury when working from home. When I wake up, one of the things I do almost immediately (If my husband is not still sleeping) is make the bed. This is a visual reminder that going back to bed is not even an option.
// GET DRESSED
There is something to be said about the power of presenting yourself professionally. While there is nothing wrong with working in your pyjamas (if you are getting work done), I promise that if you dress the part, you will feel better and your productivity will be increased. You don’t have to be all decked out in a blazer and dress pants (you can if you so desire ?), just think smart and comfortable. If it takes putting on a bit of lipstick to feel more productive, do you girl!!!
// PLAN YOUR DAY AHEAD OF TIME
Almost seems like common sense, but this is something that I struggled with in my early days of working from home. I had an idea of what I wanted to do with my day, but I never really thought about how I wanted it to play out. Needless to say, I always got distracted and what was meant to be 4-5 hours of work often ended up taking the whole day. I would advise to plan your day the night before, remembering to schedule time for breaks.

// SET BOUNDARIES
The line between work and life can be so blurred when you do both under the same roof. It is easy to get distracted by the dishes in the sink or the room that needs tidying. Create boundaries for yourself by setting aside time to do those things OUTSIDE of your regular work hours. Also set boundaries in other areas such as when you look at your phone, when you go to get food etc. Think about how you would behave in you were in an office and try to mimic those boundaries while working from home. I know that when I work my regular 9-5, I would not go for lunch until I had a break in my schedule. Do the same when you work from home. Do not go to the fridge every time you need a snack or think about food.
// FIND A DEDICATED WORKSPACE
Whether you have a dedicated office space or a desk in the corner of your bedroom, you should try to set aside space dedicated for work. When you get to that space, you are more likely to be motivated to start working.
// KNOW WHEN TO CALL IT A DAY
This is one tip that I am still working on figuring out. Working from home is great because you get to set your own hours. As I type this, it is 11:20 PM and I have to wake up at 5:30 AM to get ready for my ‘day job’.
It’s hard to know when to STOP, but it’s important to set hard stop times for yourself otherwise you will eventually burn out. Give yourself time to unwind at the end of your work day just as you would when you work a regular office job.
