Today is International Day of the Girls and we are celebrating over here at Azarya! This day was founded in 2012 and aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.
The world is full of beautiful, smart, talented girls who are full of potential and every single one of them deserves the chance to reach their potential. Unfortunately there are 130 MILLION girls around the world do not have access to education.
I have been going to school since I was 4. Every September for the last 18 years I have packed my school bag, put on my flyest outfit and marched in for my first day of school. I HATED school when I was a kid. I would cry every morning before I got dropped off and my mom would tell me that if I didn’t go to school I would end up selling oranges on the side of the road (it’s a thing they do in Nigeria)! While I don’t necessarily think that school is for everyone, there is no doubt that it gives you a lot of fundamental skills. I am a recent university graduate and I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience quality education and decide if school is for them. Who would have thought the girl who cried everyday before school would be doing her Master?
ONE has launched a campaign to make sure every girl counts. Here at Azarya we have chosen 38,502,000 because approximately 38 MILLION girls in Nigeria are not enrolled in primary education. That is not okay! Every girl should have access to school so that they can change the world!
