I recently had a conversation with a couple of friends where we were talking about how to trust God and what that actually looks like in real life- when things are not going the way you planned or perhaps in a way that you would like.
If I am being Honest, to Trust in God is hard. Because life itself is hard and often very difficult to make sense of. We often doubt that God is looking out for our best interest. We lack faith in his promises and as an end result worry about the things that we cannot control. In general, we do not know how to Trust in The Lord. So today I am going to be discussing what this topic means to me and also shedding light on 3 practical steps that I take (and you can too) to Trust in the Lord even when things don’t seem to be making sense.
Lets start by answering the question:
What is Trust?
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines trust as, “The belief that someone or something is reliable, good, honest, or effective.”
Why is it hard for us to Trust in The Lord?
I believe it is because we have been programmed to not trust anyone. We have all been hurt or disappointed at least once in our lives. What happens when we are hurt by someone is that we make a commitment to do it ourselves. We believe that if we just do it ourselves, we will do it right. The problem comes when we try to take that approach with God. We have all had times when we felt let down by God. I don’t know about you, but in my life there have been times when God did not do things the way I wanted. One approach that I could take would be to attempt to take back control of everything- To say ” sorry God, but look how it worked out last time- I will take care of it from now on.” The other approach would be to say “God, I know things did not work out how I wanted it, but I know and I TRUST YOU! I know that you are working all things out together for good.
The longer I live, the more I realize that God is trust worthy. I can go on for hours just recounting all of the things that have happened in my life that have led me to this belief. I have had success and I have had major disappointments. As I look back, I realize that all the things that I once considered loss, God has used it to lead me to where I am now. Where I am now is far greater than anything I could have asked for.
There was a time in my life where I spent a lot of time upset and stressed out about things that I had no control over. I was living and getting by, but not truly enjoying the process. NO- life is not perfect, but I live in a state of 100% surrender to God and 100% surrender to his plans for my life, so life feels a whole lot lighter than when I tried to do things and figure it out on my own.
So… How do you Trust in The Lord? I hear you ask!
Step 1- Read The Bible
The first step to learning to Trust God is by learning more about who He is! How else do you learn about God but by studying scripture?
Some of the bible verses, that I go to when I struggle with the issue of trust are listed here
2 Samuel 7: 28 – Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.
Psalm 13: 5- Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.
Psalm 56: 3- When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
Step 2- Believe The Scriptures you just read
It is not enough to simply read the bible, you have to CHOOSE to believe it. When you are able to do so and get those words on the inside of you, it will be difficult for the devil to come and shake you when you face trials.
You will face trials! But you can be prepared by meditating on the word of God and allowing to sink deep.
Step 3- Ask God for Patience
You will need patience because as I mentioned above, trials will come. Ask God to give you patience for the situation you are in and to help you trust in him.
Trusting in The Lord is believing that he is good and that he loves you and desires the best for you no matter what your circumstance looks like.
