One of our most requested questions this past year has been about how we started our blog, so today’s post is a beginner friendly summary of the steps that we took to build this blog. I will be detailing how to start a blog in 5 easy steps, while keeping in mind that many of you reading this may be trying to do so without hurting your pocket. I understand because I was in the same position not too long ago. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment or send us an email.
I started this blog with ZERO tech knowledge, LOTS of googling and many failed attempts. If I can help just one person build a blog without going through all the hassle I went through (and you can ask my husband… it was a lot of hassle), I would have achieved my goal for this post.
I have simplified the steps because I find a lot of the google searches come up with really technical lingo that takes even more googling to understand what they are talking about.
So lets get down to it! You need to start a blog? Here’s How to Start a Blog in 5 Easy Steps!
Step 1- Choose a blog platform
There are lots of great platforms out there to use in building a blog. Over the course of time, I have tried 4 of these!! So I know a thing or 2 about the pros and cons of each of the platforms. Choosing the right platform is an important step to get out of the way as all the other steps depend on it.
Blogspot, Wix, Squarespace, WordPress.com, WordPress.org… the list goes on. Are you confused about which platform is right for you? There is no one size fits all, so the platform you choose will depend on YOUR SPECIFIC NEEDS and YOUR GOALS for your blog.
During one of my searches, I found this FREE resource from one of the GURUs in the ‘How To’ Blogging game! Click here for a FREE worksheet that compares the different blogging platforms available. As well as pros/ cons of each to help you determine which platform to proceed with.
Step 2- Choose a Domain Name and get Web Hosting
Domain Name: The term used to describe the website address. For instance Facebook’s domain name is facebook.com
When choosing a domain name, it is important to choose something that is unique and reflects what your blog will be about. You also want to choose something that you will be happy with years later. You can use this free tool- Bust A Name to help you if your stuck. Just type in some keywords and it will come up with possible combinations using these words.
Once you have your domain name, you have to pay to register the domain. This will typically cost anywhere from $10-15 per year.
** If you want your custom domain, you will likely have to pay a little bit to have it. **
Web Hosting: A business that provides the technology and services needed for your web page to be seen on the internet.
When you pay a company to put your files on their web server, you’re buying hosting. They are hosting your website on their servers.
Good hosting is important because it affects things like loading time, which can result in viewers staying for extended times or leaving your blog out of frustration. I recommend using Bluehost. New accounts get a FREE domain and hosting starts at $3.95 per month which is SUPER AFFORDABLE. They also offer really good customer service support. Whenever I had a question regarding plans or the terms of my hosting, I was able to get it clarified.
I mentioned above that there are many platforms to choose from when it comes to building your blog. I chose to use WordPress, but you can substitute this step with any of the other platforms you choose.
Once you sign up with Bluehost, WordPress is automatically installed. This makes it a much easier process for beginners to begin setting up their blog!
Step 3- Pick Your Theme
There are lots of FREE themes to choose from. You can find them by simply googling ‘FREE Themes’. You can also find themes from websites such as Creative Market or Etsy. You would have to pay for these but you can install them yourself by following the instructions that come with the theme.
If you want to get a more customized look, you can also pay a developer to help build your blog.
Step 4- Social Media
This is a really important step that a lot of people forget. The number one way that you drive traffic to your blog is through social media. Specially, you want to share the interest and momentum with you friends and family (the fans that you already have?). I also think that by sharing on social media BEFORE you even release your first post, it gets people excited and it also helps to keep you accountable to the goals that you have set. I know that when it came to launching my blog, I didn’t want anybody to know so that nobody would notice if I failed. Friends, let me tell you- THIS IS THE WORST approach to take. By promoting it on Social Media ahead of time, you begin to get a feel for what people are interested in.
Step 5- Create Your First Blog Post
Now the fun begins!! You can create drafts of your blog posts and share it when you are ready for the world to see!
Voila!! You have your own blog!! Its going to be awesome!! I can already tell!
